Hnefatafl - The Viking Game

Hnefatafl, also known as The Viking Game or The King's Table, is an ancient board game that was popular in Northern Europe during the Dark Ages. This two-player strategy game is asymmetric, with one side playing as the king and his defenders, and the other as the attackers trying to capture the king. Hnefatafl offers a unique gaming experience that combines elements of chess, checkers, and modern asymmetric games.

The History of Hnefatafl

The origins of Hnefatafl can be traced back to the Roman game Ludus Latrunculorum, which spread to Germanic tribes and eventually evolved into the Viking game we know today. Archaeological evidence suggests that Hnefatafl was played by the Norse elite, with game pieces crafted from precious materials like whalebone being found in high-status burials. The game reached its peak of popularity from the 7th to the 11th century, before being largely replaced by chess.

How to Play Hnefatafl

The game is played on a square board with an odd number of cells in each row and column, typically 11x11. The king starts in the central square, surrounded by his defenders in a cross formation. The attackers are placed in groups at the edges of the board. The objective for the king's side is to escape to one of the corner squares, while the attackers aim to capture the king by surrounding him on all four sides.
All pieces move like the rook in chess - any number of squares horizontally or vertically. Captures occur when a piece is sandwiched between two opposing pieces or between an opposing piece and a corner square. The king is captured only when surrounded on all four sides. If the king reaches a corner, his side wins.
